So yay it is my 31st birthday. I spent the morning at Corcoran and my host teacher introduced Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men - and we've officially started. He is very entertaining and the students seemed to respond to him very well. At Corcoran we took a moment of silence to remember the victims of 9/11. I feel lousy for the families of all involved and hope that time is bringing some healing and closure for them.
Other than attending school, I have to say it has not exactly been a humdinger of a birthday so far. Well today, not so much - but the weekend was pretty awesome.
We drove to Edgewater on Friday night and crashed at the 'rents house. Saturday we went to see Tarzan on Broadway and had an early dinner at Marseille as planned. Tarzan was fun, lots of literally swinging characters and one memorable song: "You'll be in my Heart." It had a very cool opening as well. We all agreed that the set was extremely simple and the dialogue was pretty simple as well - but there was nothing really negative about it. As a surprise, DAS booked us a room in the Westin Times Square for Saturday night, so when the 'rents went back home, we stayed in the city.
We actually popped into a RC church on 42nd on the way back from dinner and stayed for Mass. Though the service was in Spanish, and I understood only about 25% of what was said, it was a great experience - very spiritual. After church, we went back to the Westin and DAS met up with his buddy from work - and they went off to a Sports Bar for guy time.
My friend from LOFT, Aimee, was in the city visiting her cousin - so we met up around 10 in the Meatpacking District and went to a few clubs / bars and whatnot. We went to Level V and Embassy... I had a blast at Embassy, the DJ was spinning some nice old-school tracks and I had room to dance in the VIP section (woo hoo!) and danced my little heart out. Level V was really dark and small and filled up pretty quickly. Drinks muy expensivo - a small mojito was $13 - good thing Aimee's cousin managed to score us a table with lots of free beverages. Yay for her.
Something funny that I noticed was that people in both clubs kept on checking their cell phones frantically as though they might miss something important or they wanted to seem exceptionally important. I dunno seems kinda silly to me. You're in a club, the music is awesome (and loud), and all is right in the world - just have fun and don't worry about the cell phone.
I left around 1:30am when I discovered that my own dear DAS was back in the hotel room. I was pretty tired so I crashed in the Westin's lovely signature "heavenly bed."
Yay for z's.
Sunday was nice too. My mom arranged for some of our relatives and my bestest friend, Lane, to meet at Baumgart's in Edgewater. We drove from the city to Baumgart's in record time - and had a great time chatting and catching up with everybody. After that, we (my Mom, Lane & me) chilled for a bit at the 'rents place and then DAS picked me up and we drove back home.
Yay for birthdays even though I am old now.
