Horse showing and other contact sports...

So this weekend I showed a cute Quarter Horse named Sugar at the Weedsport Horseshow. I shared her with Missy who is a youngster, but a great instructor and rider. Missy rode her in Hopeful Hunter and was Champion! I was not really Champion of anything this time, but I did have fun. Since this was only my 2nd show in 15 years, I was in the Maiden and Long Stirrup classes. I felt kind of silly, but clearly I was in my league with the 10 year olds... :) (The picture is of Sugar and me on Sunday after we finished showing.) This one little kid on a pony called Sugar whooped my butt in most of the classes. On the first day, I did not even place in the x-rail classes as I was so nervous. I probably should have not been that nervous since I've done a lot more advanced things in the past, but I'd only jumped Sugar the day before and fell off doing a line of two tiny x-rails, you can see why perhaps I'd be a little wary.

Sugar is a great little horse, very willing and she listens for the most part. She's very petite but comfortable to ride and she does not do anything too unexpected. On the ground, she can be a bit of a pain, kicking and generally being rude, but riding her is a pleasure. We did the best in the classes where Sugar was being judged as a pleasure horse, a blue of both days from two different judges, but we did pretty well in some of the other classes too. I think I was in 17 classes in all and got a bunch of ribbons, I think 10.

The most fun class was the Command class, where you have to do all of the things the announcer tells you to do, right away. The first class we did ok, but then when we halted, Sugar moved her feet and we did not place. Then the second one, we got I think a fifth. I was pretty determined to do better on the second day of showing and we were in the last three, and then doing really well, but Sugar insisted on walking from a trot in order to poop, so we got third. I smacked her with the crop, to no avail. Ugh.

Today was back to work. I worked at LOFT from 10-5 and it was a pretty good day all in all. I took Xena for a walk when I got home and now I am just chilling. The weekend was pretty hectic. I was at the showgrounds by 6am on Saturday, and stayed until 2, and I was at the showground at 6:45 on Sunday and stayed until 5, and then went to the barn until 8. I barely woke up for work this morning, but I made it on time.
